The ABC has announced that Chris Lilley’s comedy featuring grotesque schoolgirl Ja’mie King is currently smashing the online viewing records for its catch up iView service.

Its first three episodes have registered in excess of 810,000 plays.

“Australian viewers have proven that their love for Ja’mie King – the bitchiest private school girl to ever grace our screens – extends beyond just TV, with the show smashing online viewing records too,” ABC said in a statement.

“The six-part series, which first premiered on Wednesday October 23, has broken all existing viewing records for iView – making it the biggest show on the platform since its launch in 2008.

“The previous most-watched program in one day was the premiere of Doctor Who Series 7 with 76,000 views – this record was smashed by Ja’mie with 216,000 plays in one day.”

The series has benefitted from a carefully managed PR campaign which saw the character appearing in a photo shoot for Lads’ mag Zoo, and being named in Maxim’s Hot 100 list for 2013.

Writer, producer, director, actor and composer Chris Lilley has kept a low profile, but promoted Ja’mie’s activities via his @jamieschoolgirl Twitter feed, in addition to his @ChrisLilley feed.
