Pay-TV provider ASTRA has updated its codes of practice, affecting documentaries and reality programs, which will be reclassified.

Reality shows should face new classifications

The changes will see the programmes subject to classification obligations and the provision of more information to the audience.

The report of the changes from The Australian newspaper states that the code “totally prohibits the broadcast of programs which are considered likely to provoke contempt or ridicule of minorities.”

“This drops the previous qualification that restricted the ban to offensive programs that were broadcast ‘knowingly’,” it adds.

The codes were put out to public consultation and thereafter developed following talks with the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

"Subscription television providers have a direct relationship with paying customers, so providers must constantly ensure their product meets the standards expected of the viewing public," said ASTRA chief executive Andrew Maiden.

"The new codes build on the already significant community safeguards contained in subscription broadcasting codes, while still allowing consumers the freedom to watch the programs they want."

The code of practice is voluntary.
