The total spend on TV drama in Australia has risen 27 per cent since last year, totalling $372 million.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries

Screen Australia said the total hours screened increased by 19 per cent, with titles such as Serangoon Road, The Gods of Wheat Street, Rake and Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries contributing to the boom.

“One of the signs of a really robust trend under those numbers is the number of second and third series being commissioned,'' she said. “It's really uncommon and that's an enormous strength that underpins the slate,” said Screen Australia chief executive Ruth Harley.

“We're very happy with the way the producer offset has settled in,'' Dr Harley said. “It works and people know how to work it and it's very stable with banks and financiers.'

“There is clearly a growing demand from local audiences for Australian stories, across multiple platforms and new channels.”

The figures were released in the Screen Australia Drama Report 2012-13.
