ABC’s Good Morning America has finished the 2012-2013 TV season in first place — the first time that’s happened in 19 years.

GMA: Chatting and teasing

The ABC show had the largest overall audience and by the largest margin (+688,000) over No. 2 NBC’s Today. As recently as the 2010-2011 season, Today had a +740,000 lead on GMA.

GMA was up 9% in total viewers and up 4% in the demo compared to the 2011-2012 season. Today was down -15% in the demo while CBS This Morning was up +2%. The CBS morning show had its best season since 2008-2009.

The averages for the 2012-2013 season:

▪ Total Viewers: ABC: 5.300M / NBC: 4.612M / CBS: 2.770M

▪ A25-54 viewers: ABC: 1.970M / NBC: 1.884M / CBS: 998K

The last time Good Morning America won a full TV season, TV Newser recalls, Frasier and Picket Fences were the top US TV programmes, Andre Agassi was the U.S. Open champion, and just-married Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley shared a kiss at the MTV Awards.

That was Sept. 1994 and Good Morning America was broadcast from an Anywhere, USA living room set at ABC’s uptown studio.

TV Newser summed up the vibrancy of the modern show, "These days the ABC breakfast show overlooks raucous Times Square, an outer reflection of the show’s inner energy.

"The cast chat and tease each other mercilessly through commercial breaks, so much so that it’s often not clear whether they’re on the air or not.

"Between segments, they shuffle through upcoming scripts, respond to tweets and mingle with guests and fans, some of whom are invited in from outside."
