TV detector vans could be a myth, it has been suggested, after a leaked 18 page memo on facts and figures to do with TV licence fees made no mention of the vans at all.

Long rumoured to be a myth, especially in the days of digital, the lack of a single mention of TV detector vans in the leaked copy of the internal BBC report has led to further debate.

However, a TV Licensing spokesperson said: “Detector vans are an important part of our enforcement of the licence fee. We don’t go into detail about how many there are or how they work as this information might be useful to people trying to evade the fee.”

She added that the leaked figures, which revealed that there are 334 enforcement officers employed to ensure collection of the fee, only provide a ‘snapshot’ on the month.

Earlier this year, TV Licensing unveiled a campaign revealing the strangest reasons people have given for not buying a licence, including ‘Knowing my luck I’ll be dead in six months and won’t get value for money.’
