The Guardian is beefing up its US team with the move to Los Angeles of Nick Davies, one of its most high-profile reporters.

Nick Davies: Los Angeles-bound

Davies, largely known in the UK for his revelations about phone-hacking at News of the World in 2011, was last year voted the UK's best investigative journalist in a Press Gazette poll. He has been involved recently in the stories about whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Special projects editor Paul Lewis has also relocated to Washington and the Guardian US is hiring a news editor to join the New York operation, says Press Gazette.

Davies was based in the US between 1987 and 1989 before moving back to the UK to work for The Guardian.

The paper now employs 57 people in the US, 29 of whom are editorial. It opened its New York office in 2011 and now has a Washington DC bureau as well as correspondents in LA and Chicago.

The paper has seen a big spike in US web traffic following the publication of whistleblower Snowden’s revelations about federal surveillance operations.

Adding to its international sheen, the paper’s website has dropped its .co.uk domain name to become www.theguardian.com (just like The Drum).
