Mountain Dew, the American soft drink brand, has rolled out a series of artistic ads from creative agency BBDO New York.

The spots form part of the wider ‘This is How We Dew’ campaign launched earlier this year. They see sports stars including NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., skateboarder Paul Rodriguez and snowboarder Danny Davis placed in thrones made of the everything which they use in their respective sports.

Entitled ‘Portraits’ the commercials have premiered on Mountain Dew’s dedicated website and will roll out across US network and cable television networks throughout the summer.

The ads are an amalgamation of matte paintings, 3D layers, live footage and 2D animation.

Marco Spier, co-founder and creative director of visual effects company Psyop, told Co. Design the intricate commercials are like living paintings. “We had the idea of creating the ultimate Bosch painting," said Spier.

"He made great pictures 500 years ago--very, very, dense and a lot of action, and we were really intrigued by his living pictures. But we wanted to bring something more contemporary, and so we thought, ‘What if this picture is actually an infinite loop, and it would always move forever?’ ”
