The British Board of Film Classification has announced plans to develop a new traffic light system for online videos by crowdsourcing ratings from viewers.

In a partnership with Dutch media regulator Nicam the agency will seek to introduce a ratings system for user generated content following a 40 per cent rise in the number of online only classifications last year.

Such content currently falls out with the remit of such bodies, a loophole which the BBFC is keen to close.

A prototype of the system has already been developed that involves both viewers and the content creator being relied upon to provide details about its content.

Such a system has been called for by firms such as Netflix which has sought a certificate for its online only series House of Cards.
