The Ministry of Defence has announced that it has formed a new cyber security partnership with its biggest contractors in order to better defend British interests online.

The Defence Cyber Protection partnership will see defence firms, who must weather cyber-attacks daily, collaborate on developing safeguards and countermeasures.

It’s hoped that this model will inspire other industries to come together in a similar fashion to head off the threat posed by foreign governments, criminals and individuals.

Nine defence companies will collaborate with the UK government on the venture by working to ensure higher standards of security amongst smaller firms further down the supply chain after cyber attacks were identified as one of the top four threats to UK national security.

GCHQ asserts that Britain is on the receiving end of around 70 sophisticated attacks each month with 15 of these directed at the defence industry.

A total of £650m has been pledged by the British government to beef up digital infrastructure to mitigate this threat.
