YouTube has reported healthy advertising growth after tripling sales via mobile devices to an estimated $350m over the past six months.

The Google owned video sharing site is now accessed by 1bn global users, a quarter of whom use handheld services, fuelling a growth in spend from advertisers to reach this niche.

Faster wireless networks and rapid adoption of smartphones and tablets are behind a projected 10 fold increase in US mobile video ad sales to $2.69bn by 2017, according to one survey by eMarketer.

Lucas Watson, YouTube’s vice president of sales, said: “The commercial business has exploded. It’s a huge part of our business, and we know that’s where it’s headed.”

It is believed that YouTube now accounts for around 10 per cent of Google’s total revenue with as much as a quarter of that accrued from mobile.
