The New South Wales Government has published its social media guidance, which opens with the bold claim that it is intended to “empower public sector staff to use these tools.”

The policy was launched on Twitter

It encourages government agencies to abide by the guiding principles: be open, collaborative, responsive, reliable and appropriate.

Departments are also encouraged to develop their own social media polices, and should, the policy states:

Create opportunities to listen to and engage with staff, the public and industry in community building, policy discussion and service design;

- Empower public sector staff to use social media to respond quickly to customers and emerging issues;

- Support a consistent and quality experience; and

- Ensure that social media approaches are appropriately resourced and that governance.

The @ICT_NSW account, the Official page of the NSW Government ICT Strategy, launched the policy on twitter, stating: “Hope you like it!”

Luke Buckle (@buckleup) whose twitter bio describes him as “Social Media Manager at Fox Sports” welcomed the policy, saying : “Good work. Succinct, if a bit wordy.”
