MTV UK revealed it received more than 500,000 votes, with 90,000 coming in just three days, ahead of the unveiling of its ‘Stars of 2012’, which will be broadcast today, Saturday 22 December.

The interactive campaign to promote ‘MTV Stars of 2012’ invited viewers to vote for the 60 artists that featured most heavily on MTV UK music channels, including MTV Music, MTV Hits, MTV Rocks, MTV Classic, MTV Dance and MTV Base, using that hastag #mtvstars.

MTV then visualised the votes as they came in via a live online vote counter on mtv.co.uk.

The use of social media voting and visualisation built on the Twitter voting system created for MTV EMAs and VMAs, with votes being counted by technology partner Mass Relevance.

Philip O’Ferrall, senior vice president, digital, Viacom International Media Networks said: “The huge number of votes for ‘MTV Stars of 2012’ and the first ever live visualisation of these builds on the pioneering voting system we created around the MTV EMAs.

“It is the perfect way to engage with our youth audience, creating an interactive, rich and immersive experience for all our global music fans - allowing them to connect with the MTV brand wherever and however they choose.”
