Media regulator Ofcom has confirmed that it has launched a formal investigation into broadcasts aired by BBC Newsnight and ITV’s This Morning amidst claims that they breached editorial rules.

The BBC has been heavily criticised for screening allegations implicating Lord McAlpine to an historic child abuse scandal without carrying out proper checks or speaking to the individual involved.

Disciplinary proceedings against those involved are currently pending.

ITV meanwhile was criticised after This Morning presenter Philip Schofield ambushed the Prime Minister live on air with a list of alleged paedophiles without warning him in advance and inadvertently flashing the names to viewers.

'Disciplinary action' has already been taken against Schofield.
