The BBC has announced that its director of news, Helen Boaden and her deputy Steve Mitchell, have both ‘stepped aside’ pending the outcome of an internal review.
The pairs departure from day to day running of the news department follows the dramatic exit of their boss, former director general George Entwistle on Saturday.
Both are subject to a number of ongoing inquiries, one of which is headed by former Sky News head Nick Pollard, which are investigating their actions in the spiked Newsnight Jimmy Savile piece and a botched investigation which falsely accused a former senior Conservative of paedophilia.
Ms Boaden was director of BBC News when the decision to scrap the Savile investigation was taken.

It's a shame so many careers have been derailed because of the actions of Jimmy Saville and the pressures of office politics to maintain silence. Hopefully, the BBC will make it easier for people to speak out when their bosses try to squash the truth.
