Last night’s jump by Felix Baumgartner from an altitude of 128,100 feet above New Mexico has seen him set a record on YouTube for the largest audience watching a live stream through the site.

Google has confirmed that over 8 million watched Baumgartner’s 10 minute descent, reaching around 833.9 miles an hour, making him the first man to break the sound barrier without the aid of a vehicle.

We congratulate Felix Baumgartner and the entire Red Bull Stratos team for their successful mission, and for creating a livestream with the most concurrent views ever on YouTube,” YouTube stated in a post.

At the time of writing, RedBull, who sponsored the freefall, had seen over 391,000 views of the recorded video jump through its YouTube channel.
