Conservative party and David Cameron top the chart for tweets during conference season

The Conservative party conference, which took place between Sunday 7 October and today, 10 October, racked up 490,000 mentions on Twitter, beating the figures for both Labour (385,000 mentions) and Liberal Democrats (240,000 mentions).

The research, by Twitter used tweets that contain mentions of the party, leader, key speakers and hashtags relevant to the specific conference periods in order to discover these figures.

It was found that David Cameron’s speech today led to 26,000 tweets per hour, with the most tweeted moment being Cameron telling the crowd, ‘I went to a great school’.

Ed Miliband’s speech on 2 October came a close second with 25,500 tweets per hour, with the most tweeted moment being Miliband saying: ‘We'll look back on 2012 as a golden summer for Britain's plebs, when every politician in the land was on their side’.

Nick Clegg came last, with 13,500 tweets per hour, and his most tweeted moment being his announcement that Paddy Ashdown would lead the 2015 election campaign.

As well as having the most talked about speech, David Cameron also gained the most mentions on Twitter: 214,000 mentions; compared to Nick Clegg’s 135,000 mentions and Ed Miliband’s 99,000 mentions.
