Michael O’Kane, the editor of the Irish Daily Star, has been suspended following his decision to publish topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge.

The suspension was driven by the papers co-owners, Independent News and Media pending an investigation into the decision making process that led to the publication.

Richard Desmond, who also co-owns the title, has gone further saying that he would take ‘immediate’ steps to close the title down.

Ireland’s justice minister has also waded into the furore, calling for a rethink of the country’s privacy laws to strike a balance between ‘prurient interest’ and the ‘public interest’.

Meanwhile a French court will rule later today whether to stop the sale and distribution of topless pictures of the Royal as a result of legal action instigated by the Duke and Duchess.
