London 2012 Paralympic athletes register huge increases in Twitter followers

The British athletes involved in the London 2012 Paralympic Games have seen a huge rise in Twitter followers, as fans have turned to the micro-blogging service to reach out to the new sporting stars.

According to The Press Association, wheelchair racer David Weir now has 17,495 followers following the closing ceremony of the games last night, in comparison to the 3,418 that he had before the games began.

Meanwhile swimmer Ellie Simmonds, who won four medals, including two golds, now has 25,903 followers, having started with 5,776 ahead of the games and South African gold medallist Oscar Pistorius picked up more than 30,000 followers over the last fortnight, reaching 199,253.

The closing ceremony for the Paralympic Games was held last night, closing the London 2012 Games, with Team GB stars set to participate in a parade through central London later today.
