At a high court case-management conference on 7 September, it emerged that 68 new civil claims for phone-hacking damages had been lodged and that 40 more were expected to be added before the 14 September deadline.

News International has already accepted 124 claims into the scheme it set up to compensate phone-hacking victims. The addition of these civil cases will total 232 outstanding claims, although Hugh Thomlinson QC said at the hearing he expects this number to be “somewhere under 300”.

50 cases have already been settled by News International, including those involving Charlotte Church, Jude Law and John Prescott.

New claimants are believed to include Kerry Katona and her ex-husband Brian McFadden and England footballer Sol Campbell as well as prominent barrister Kirsty Brimelow and lawyer Robin Winskell.
