Prime Minister David Cameron has named junior minister in the Department for Work and Pensions, Maria Miller, as the successor to Jeremy Hunt as culture secretary as part of his first major cabinet reshuffle.

Prior to becoming an MP in 2005, Miller worked on two separate occasions at advertising agency, Grey, in marketing and advertising. Between these roles Miller held roles within marketing and business development at oil giant Texaco, and at PR company, Rowland, which was then owned by Saatchi & Saatchi.

Miller takes on the department responsible for sport, arts and media and will deal with issues such as ensuring the Olympic legacy, and the final report of the Leveson Inquiry.

Speaking of her appointment, Miller commented: “"I am delighted to have been appointed as the culture secretary by the prime minister and am very much looking forward to tackling the many challenges that the role will bring.”

The 48-year-old MP for Basingstoke will also take on the role of minister for women and equalities, a role held previously by Liberal Democrat Lynne Featherstone. Jeremy Hunt will now head the Department of Health.
