Apple has won a stunning victory in its patent battle with Samsung in California. A federal jury in San Jose late last night UK time decided Samsung must pay Apple more than $1 billion - a huge win for Apple.

iPhone: Huge victory

The jury found that Samsung "willfully violated" several Apple patents, including the iPhone design, pinch-and-zoom and bounce-back features, in the smartphone patent infringement case.

The "wilful" line means Apple could in fact now go for triple damages.

Apple attorney Michael Jacobs also told the judge they would move to block the sale of many Samsung products in the United States within seven days; she has already has issued preliminary injunctions against the Nexus phone and Galaxy 10.1 tablet.

The verdict by the nine-person jury came sooner than many expected. Lawyers on both sides, staying nearby at hotels, rushed to the courtroom to hear the verdict.

Apple had sought damages of up to $2.5 billion, Samsung also countersued Apple - but got nothing out of that gambit. The South Korean company is certain to appeal .

Apple is the biggest tablet maker and Samsung is No 1 in Android smartphone sales, the system backed by Google. Apple alleged in the weeks-long trial that Samsung copied their iPhone and iPad.

Following Apple's huge victory , there are big issues to be addressed on the design of the Samsung smartphones.
