Police have arrested the 17-year-old accused of trolling Olympic diver Tom Daley yesterday, after he finished fourth in the Men's Synchronized 10m Diving event.

A spokeswoman for Dorset police, confirmed: "A 17-year-old man was arrested by Dorset police officers in the early hours this morning at a guesthouse in the Weymouth area on suspicion of malicious communications. He is currently helping police with their inquiries."

Daley, who alongside partner Pete Waterfield finished fourth in the event, retweeted a message from Riley69 which read; “You let your dad down i hope you know that.”

Daley’s father, who he had always cited as an influence in his career, died last year from brain cancer.

The same tweeter also accused Daley of being ‘over hyped’ but following messages from other users began to apologise to the diver.

“I'm sorry mate i just wanted you to win cause its (sic) the olympics I'm just annoyed we didn't win I'm sorry tom accept my apology,” was a subsequent tweet.

Another read; "please i don't want to be hated I'm just sorry you didn't win i was rooting for you pal to do britain all proud just so upset."

This is so bizarre. My three year-old called me a 'stupid idiot' yesterday. Thank goodness she doesn't have a twitter account yet or maybe I'd be down at the police station this morning trying to make bail.

A little bit of trolling is probably not what spurred police into action. It was more likely the multiple threats to kill people, stab them in the throat or the particularly delightful "I hope you get raped by a black man" comments that followed on.

I don't think it's just nasty comments that got the police involved. He made a death threat too: http://thedigitalreport.net/2012/07/uk-diver-tom-daley-subjected-to-abus...

Hadn't seen all of that detail and based on the discussions in the office, my colleagues haven't either. None of the media are reporting the additional tweets which are on the digitalreport.net site. If these tweets were actually sent then why aren't they being included in the coverage (apart from the obvious of the bad language)? The debate which will inevitably follow will be skewed because of this.
