International design and style magazine, Wallpaper* has launched a new fragrance with German publisher Gerhard Steidl and fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld.

Wallpaper* commissioned Steidl, who's passion for the unique scent was the inspiration for the perfume, to work with avant-garde perfumer Geza Schoen to bottle the fragrance. Named Paper Passion by Karl Lagerfeld, the perfume has captured the scent of freshly printed books using a mix of just five ingredients - where most perfumes use between 20 and 100.

The packaging, designed by Lagerfeld, features a real book with a hidden cut out compartment to house the perfume bottle in the middle. In the front of the book short are essays on the subject of paper by Lagerfeld, Schoen, German author and artist Günter Grass, and Wallpaper* editor-in-chief Tony Chambers.

Lagerfeld has written: “Beautiful paper is for me the top of luxury. I am a paper freak. It’s a physical passion. I cannot live without paper. Touching perfect paper has something sensuous about it.”

Tony Chambers has said of the collaboration: “Wallpaper* has for the past three years brought together designers, craftsmen and manufacturers to create unusual and remarkable works for our annual Handmade exhibition. This collaboration is one of our best: an extraordinary fragrance with beautiful packaging. A bottle in a book. A book in a bottle.”

Retailing at £68 ($98, €85), Paper Passion is available online, at selected concept stores, bookshops and perfumeries around the world.
