Sky News has revealed its new-look website following a major redesign of skynews.com. Now powered by a bespoke content management system, which will be behind all of Sky News’ digital platforms, this should allow for more flexible story-telling and a greater focus on video and visual content.

The new site is intended to make it easier to keep on top of the biggest news stories as well as explore video, images and analysis as breaking news unfolds.

Andrew Hawken, head of editorial, Sky News Digital, said, “Viewers will find the site easier to navigate, with all the top stories in one place and with much more detail, as well as additional benefits like a broader range of comment and analysis pieces and more detailed weather service.”

The new homepage presents a clear picture of the day’s headlines and allows users to see stories in more detail with galleries, graphs, timelines and images. The site has also been simplified for visitors to share content, and there is more focus on comment and analysis.

A revamped weather section has also been launched giving users a detailed, and up-to-date, three-hourly local forecast for their postcode, and still includes a broader look at the national and international weather too.

Other popular features from the old site remain, such as; live streaming of Sky News in full screen, the latest three minute bulletins and the day’s national newspaper front pages.

John Jelley, executive producers, Sky News Online, added, “We went back to the drawing board to give video and rich interactive media a more central role in the site.

“We wanted to make the most of a new content management system to produce some of the web’s best story experiences – where any type of content can take the lead, and where users can explore a full range of relevant context, all on the same page.”
