Winners of the annual D&AD Student Awards were announced this evening, the awards for creative students are seen as an ideal launching pad for their careers with 76% of winners going on to get a job or placement within three months.

With DA&D celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year and this being the 35th Anniversary of the awards, Tim Lindsay, D&AD CEO, commented, “If we want to stay competitive in the global marketplace, the best way to do that is to support our best young minds”.

Winning also provides graduates with the opportunity to take a coveted spot at the D&AD Graduate Academy including a paid placement or bursary. In order to win a D&AD Yellow Pencil students fulfil live briefs set by top brand creatives, who then participate in judging the works.

This year the challenges set included illustrating the cover of Little White Lies magazine, designing the next generation of performance eyewear for Oakley and creating a photography story for Rankin’s new magazine, The Hunger.

Simon Fraser University saw the most Yellow Pencil winners with five students winning in the digital design category. Winners in the advertising category came from University of Ulster, The Arts University College at Bournemouth, University of Salford, Miami Ad School, Beckmans College of Design, University of Central Lancashire and Northumbria University.

This year also saw the introduction of an award open to new creatives, anyone under 26 who has graduated within the last two years.’ Make your Mark’ challenged graduates to focus on how they present themselves - and their talent - to potential employers and was won by Joy Ayles, Chad Goddard and Kyle Jacobson.

Lindsay continued, “Industry has a duty to nurture new talent – not because D&AD tells it to, but because the creative economy relies on new ideas to thrive.”

Tim Wann, D&AD Graduate, added, “‘there is no degree course out there that can offer the same experience as the Graduate Academy.”
