Virgin Money has signed a two-year deal to become the new shirt sponsor of Newcastle United with immediate effect.

The deal was agreed after Virgin Money bought former Newcastle sponsor Northern Rock from the government.

The Northern Rock logo on the team's shirts was replaced by Virgin Money's branding for Newcastle's clash with Manchester United last night.

Jayne-Anne Gadhia, chief executive at Virgin Money, said: "The Northern Rock sponsorship started in 2003 and it is an important link to the North-East which we are pleased to continue."

Newcastle United managing director, Derek Llambias, added: "It is an excellent deal for both parties and we're very happy to have them on board."
