This year’s wedding of William and Kate has been named (unsurprisingly) as the television event of the year, pulling in an estimated 26.2m viewers.

Of this total the BBC secured the lions share, winning 13.4m viewers.

By contrast ITVs X Factor, normally the show to beat, pulled in just 13.1m at its peak, the second largest audience share of any single channel.

ITV dominated the top five most watched shows however - thanks to its populist diet of reality shows, dramas and soaps.

Top five audiences of the year:

1. BBC1 The Royal Wedding 13.44m

2. ITV1 X Factor final 13.10m

3. ITV1 Britain’s Got Talent final 12.45m#

4. Coronation Street 12.20m

5. I’m a Celebrity final 12.18m
