The BBC have been forced to defend their screening of footage showing a polar bear tending to her young – despite it being filmed in a zoo.

The controversial footage was woven into material shot on location in the Arctic because the BBC deemed it would have been “impossible” to film the event in real life.

Complaints were stirred by a Daily Mirror article pointing out that the commentary had failed to tell the audience that the scene had been shot in a German zoo.

Defending their coverage the BBC claimed that the footage was “clearly explained” online.
