The Newspaper Society is to merge the communications and marketing departments that will be overseen by chief operating officer of Johnston Press, Danny Cammiade.

Following the decision to depart next month by marketing director Robert Ray to join an agency/media owner after seven years at the organisation, the departments will be merged, with Lynne Anderson, communications director, becoming communications and marketing director. She will be handed responsibility for developing an integrated communications and marketing strategy, and will continue to oversee the Newspaper Society and the Newspaper Publisher Associations, deputising for director David Newall.

David Newell, director of the Newspaper Society, said: “Under Robert’s energetic and effective leadership, we have grown awareness and understanding among advertisers and agencies of the unique strengths of UK local media and developed its usage as a powerful national advertising medium across print and digital. Robert has put us on the map with major agencies and blue-chip clients.”

Danny Cammiade, currently Marketing Committee chairman, said: “There is a logic to bringing the communications and marketing functions together in a more cohesive way under Lynne’s leadership. She has the skills and knowledge of the industry to help us build on the excellent work we are currently doing and which Robert Ray has done so much to promote and develop through his marketing insights and strategies.”
