Facebook has been left red faced after mistakenly deleting the official account of Salman Rushdie – believing it to be a fraud.

The mistake was compounded when the world famous author was forced to resort to rival social networking service Twitter to campaign to have his identity reinstated.

Rushdie was angered by Facebook’s response to the affair, in which he said the site ignored numerous to remedy the situation and which saw Facebook refuse to allow him use of the ‘Salman’ first name – even when he presented them with his passport.

Only when a phalanx of Tweeters got behind his cause was the matter resolved – within two hours.

Rushdie has now received an official apology from the Facebook team.
