One of Fleet Street's most noted business correspondents has warned marketers that they must keep investing in their brands even during times of economic struggle.

Marketing is often said to be one of the first areas cut during times of financial hardship, but Robert Miller, the host of Telegraph TV's Business Bullet, stressed that even established brands must keep investing in self-promotion or risk being overtaken by hungrier rivals.

Speaking at The Telegraph's Future Predictions event in Salford, the experienced journalist said: "You have to keep spending.

"The moment consumers lose sight of you some upstart will come along and take your place.

"Look at Matalan - a FTSE 100 company that wouldn't promote itself."
