Embattled Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, facing a vote of no confidence today in parliament, has taken to Facebook to deny rumours that he will soon resign.

Writing on his Facebook wall Berlusconi simply posted to his 330,000 followers: ““The rumours of my resignation are groundless.”

Berlusconi’s public statement follows a week of frenzied speculation in the Italian press amidst an escalating debt crisis.

Rumours reached fever pitch when the PM’s former spokesperson said he would step down “within hours” prompted the public rebuttal on the social networking platform.
