News International is plotting the release of a new wave of smartphone and tablet apps within the next three months as the publisher seeks to establish a “liquid experience” for its readers between print, web and mobile devices.

At present The Sun is only available in PDF form on tablets with the new software designed to present the papers content in a more “Sun-esque” manner.

The push heralds a desire by NI execs to hold onto the Sun’s readership in an era of social media and the growing expectations of tech savvy consumers.

Aspiring to create a something akin to a “movie experience” the publisher is planning to issue custom alerts to readers who have opened particular stories – keeping them abreast of developments as they happen.

Nick Bell, NI’s head of digital products, said: “I think it is less about print, it's more about quality journalism. What we are really focusing on is making sure that quality journalism lives on whatever the medium. What platform it is on is kind of irrelevant.

"We are really excited about the tablet and smartphone devices but by far the most important thing is that content that lives and breathes on them."
