Hedgehog lab partner and co-founder Sarat Pediredla comments on the iPhone 4S.

“Apple announced the iPhone 4S tonight. The tech world is already up in arms over the "disappointing" news. From tech blogs to major newspapers, there will be coverage over the next few days that would give you the impression that what Apple announced today was no more impressive than the opening of a new store in Shanghai. Put aside the fact that the store in Shanghai broke all records by attracting a record 100,000 people in the opening weekend, and the announcement today is still pretty groundbreaking as far as people outside tech circles are concerned.

“The majority of the coverage will focus on the previous speculation that Apple is due an iPhone 5 regardless of the fact that the iPhone 5 is creature of myth and magic created by frenzied pundits. The disappointment of the tech media will focus on how the iPhone hardware was not re-designed to create a new "look and feel". I think the iPhone 4 is an excellent piece of industrial design (in spite of the antenna issues) and Apple would have been wrong to re-design the hardware just because "people expect them to". Yet, there will be no end to the doomsayers and critics who will take this opportunity to predict the start of Apple's downfall.

“This is a real shame considering what Apple has announced in the combination of iOS 5 and iCloud is a glimpse into the future of where mobile computing is headed. Granted none of this is revolutionary stuff in terms of technology but this is the first time a phone manufacturer has delivered software that delivers the seamless cloud experience iOS 5 delivers. In a way, Apple is bringing the "Cloud" to the masses in a way Google, Dropbox, or Salesforce could not.

“Siri might not be new as far as voice recognition goes but I am pretty excited about the way Apple has tied this into the core iOS system to integrate everything from finding restaurants to booking calendar events. I am especially excited at the possibility of Apple opening up an API for developers to tap into this technology that will allow developers to create intelligent apps. Can you imagine using the Tesco app to order groceries on your way home by just speaking into your phone? Pretty exciting stuff!

“The bottom line is that Apple has delivered a major upgrade and a device in iPhone 4S that people will desire and want. You don't need to look further than the long lines that will be forming at the Apple Stores next week to figure that Apple built a phone that people want, and not what the pundits and tech media want.”
