Northcliffe Media’s Western Daily Press is to return to Bristol, just over a year after its controversial move out of its circulation zone to Plymouth.

On the move... again

According to Bristol NUJ, the decision to send paper’s editorial operations 150 miles south was made in March last year in an effort to enable better cooperation with the Western Morning News.

The decision led to a number of staff taking voluntary redundancy and led many to question why the paper was being taken out of its circulation zone.

Bristol NUJ says that in a memo to staff, Bristol News and Media publisher Alan Renwick fell short of admitting that the relocation had been a failure, saying:

“It has been decided to move The Western Daily Press editorial operation from its current base in Plymouth to Bristol. This enables the business to move forward with its editorial and commercial operations together and based once again in the heart of its circulation area, the West of England.

“Over the next few weeks we will conduct a process of consultation with Western Daily Press staff currently based in Plymouth. It is anticipated that the process will be completed by the end of September.”
