The NUJ has been forced to re-run its election ballot for its deputy general secretary role, after a number of ineligible members were included.

NUJ general secretary has apologised for the error in which data used meant that a ‘significant number’ of ineligible members were included in the ballot.

The mistake was said to be the result of human error in creating the membership data for the for the Electoral Reform Services, which was discovered at the end of last week.

All three candidates standing for election have been informed and data being reprocessed to ensure accuracy. All ballot papers will also be printed on differently coloured paper from the previous papers, with a slip being inserted to once again explain why the election is being held again.

Members eligible to vote have also been emailed.

Michelle Stanistreet said: “This is very unfortunate error and we are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to members and candidates. It is vital that the election is carried out fairly, and that only those members eligible to vote receive a chance to determine the outcome of the election. That means there is no option but to re-run the ballot.”
