The Guardian is to up its Monday to Friday cover price by 20p to £1.20p.

Media Week reports that the weekday increase, which will become effective from next Monday, will mean the Guardian is 20p dearer than the Times and the Daily Telegraph.

The cover price of the Saturday issue also goes up this week by 20p to £2.10p and will help offset financial loss.

According to Media Week, the paper’s editor Alan Rusbridger will explain the reasoning behind the price increase in this Saturday’s issue.

The paper is offering subscribers 38% off the cover price, in a bid to lock in long-term readers.

Chris Lawson, content sales and marketing director at GNM, explained: "The Guardian is a high-quality product and we believe that this is the right price point for our newspaper at this time.

"The price increase will enable us to continue to invest in the kind of ground-breaking investigative journalism that, in 2011, has seen us win Newspaper of the Year and drive increases in sales and readership."
