It has been reported that the government is to spend £3 million of the Olympics budget to promote the UK as a holiday destination for Londoners wanting to leave the bustle.

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt told The Telegraph that the message will be if Londoners are planning to leave the city during the Olympics, it should be to a UK holiday destination.

Hunt said: "Three million is a small amount of money, in our minds it is quite clear we will meet the [Olympic] budget."

He added that the Olympics will generate £1 billion in free advertising of the country in 2012.
