Volkswagen's pride and joy is the 'up!' city car which is making its debut at the giant motor show. But don't be surprised if the single seat electric car NILS turns many heads.

This weekend a team of around 1,000 people are on site putting the finishing touches to the Volkswagen stand for the opening next week.

Shaped like a cloud, the 8,893 square metre stand will house over 50 vehicles. And even that is not the shows's biggest stand. That honour is expected to go to Audi.

On the VW stand will be the scene stealer: the NILS single-seat electric commuting vehicle will be making its world premiere appearance. No, you can't drive it, even if you are a journalist. It will be a static display on the stand, a VW spokesman told me.

But here is a sneak picture preview . Doesn't it look dashing? I was reminded however of the German microcars of the Mid 50s, in particular the Messerschmitt Kabinenroller.

Volkswagen would really rather we focused on the new up! city car (pictured) which is also making its public debut in Frankfurt. It is expected to go on sale in the UK in three versions next year, with prices starting at £8000.

Also on show will be the recently unveiled new generation Beetle, new Tiguan and Golf Cabriolet.

As well as the cars themselves, Volkswagen is using a 30 metre interactive wall which will give visitors "a taste of mobility in the future," as well as presenting details on innovations and alternative technologies.

Along with all those cars, 2,100 lamps and roughly 80 kilometres of cables, visitors to the stand can expect to see members of the Volkswagen UK public relations team There will be a press conference on the first press day (Tuesday 13 September) at 11:20 on the Volkswagen stand.
