News of the World journalists who ordered a private detective to hack into mobile phones belonging to six public figures will not be revealed to the public.

Scotland Yard has intervened to prevent the publication of the names, which were passed to Steve Coogan on Friday by Glenn Mulcaire, the private investigator who worked for the paper, as part of a court order obtained earlier this year. Coogan is one of the celebrities suing the news of the World for breach of privacy.

It is said that the police do not want the names to be revealed as it could compromise Operation Wheeting by tipping off potential suspects.
