Faced with increased competition from the likes of Google + and Twitter Facebook is vying to remain ahead of the pack with roll out of a further series of feature enhancements.

These include an update to the site’s controversial privacy settings – including giving users more control over tagged photos.

Previously any friend can tag a photo of you as they wish but now users will have access to a drop down menu which will allow them to remove the photo – or even block the friend. The revised code will also allow tagging of non-friends (although they must approve the photo first).

Other changes being rolled out over the next few days include an option to add a location link to other users mentioned in wall posts.

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then Google will be chuffed with Facebook’s decision to share content with specific sets of friends – a definite nod to the “circles” feature of Google+.

The controversial “Places” feature on Facebook’s mobile app will also be phased out in response to user complaints over privacy. Instead members can add their location to status updates as they go along.

Chris Cox, facebook’s vice president of product, said: “This dropdown menu will be expanding over time to include smaller groups of people you may want to share with, like co-workers, friend lists you've created, and groups you're a member of. These will make it easy to quickly select exactly the audience you want for any post.”
