Researchers investigating the most frequently displayed shopping websites returned by Google search criteria have compiled a top ten list of brands.

Searchmetrics, the search analytic software specialists who authored the report, placed ebay in the coveted top slot – pipping retailing rivals Amazon and Play to the crown.

Google itself occupied the second slot owing to their practice of aggregating two or more shopping results for a keyword. If the user clicks on this they are redirected to the search firms shopping results index.

Brands seeking greater visibility on the search platform are now being urged to improve their video and image content – both of which are highly positioned in Google UK search results according to Dr Horst Joepen, Searchmetrics CEO.

In a separate analysis the same team found that the Daily Mail is leading the way in terms of online visibility, followed by the guardian, BBC and Telegraph.

Searchmetrics arrived at their conclusions after analysing the top 100 results displayed by Google for for no less than 28m search terms over a period of four months.
