Police investigating phone hacking at the News of the World have arrested a ‘key figure’ at the now defunct newspaper, reported to be its former managing editor Stuart Kuttner.

The Guardian reports that the unnamed man was arrested on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications, and on suspicion of corruption allegations and that he attended a police station in London this morning expecting to be questions about phone hacking at the newspaper, and was surprised to be arrested.

He is expected to be released on bail until October.

The newspaper closed last month following the revelation that an employee had hacked into the phone of murder schoolgirl Milly Dowler and erased messages, during the search to find her.
