Newsnight’s Michael Crick is to take the place of Cathy Newman as political correspondent for the channel 4 news.

The vacancy was created by Newham becoming a regular presenter of the news. Crick will work alongside political editor, Gary Gibbon.

Crick worked on the Channel 4 news when it launched in 1982, but then moved to the BBC after eight years.

He told the Guardian: “Channel 4 News has a reputation for an in-depth, analytical and cheeky approach to politics, and I look forward to delivering exactly that.

“Whilst I am sad to leave Newsnight after 19 happy years, I have always admired Gary Gibbon's journalism and it's fantastic to be returning to my ITN roots to join him and the rest of the Channel 4 News team.”

This news comes on the same day as it is announced that BBC Radio 4 reporter Norman Smith will replace Laura Kuenssberg as chief political correspondent for the BBC. Kuenssberg left the BBC to become business editor for ITV.
