The Guardian has apologised to the Sun following false allegations that the newspaper obtained Gordon Brown’s medical records for the article written about Brown’s son having cystic fibrosis.

However, the Sun said that the information was received from an unnamed man, whose child also had cystic fibrosis and wanted awareness about the condition raised. He had thought revealing that the former PM’s son had the condition would do this.

The individual signed an affidavit confirming this.

In a statement printed in its corrections and clarification section today, The Guardian said: "Articles in the Guardian of Tuesday 12 July incorrectly reported that the Sun newspaper had obtained information on the medical condition of Gordon Brown's son from his medical records.

"In fact the information came from a different source and the Guardian apologises for its error."
