Prime Minister David Cameron has said that his former communications chief Andy Coulson should be prosecuted if it is found that he lied about his knowledge over phone hacking practices at the News of the World.

“The people involved whether they were directly responsible for the wrongdoing, sanctioned it, or covered it up however high or low they go must not only be brought to justice they must also have no future role in the running of a media company in our country,” he said.

He added the Coulson should face charges should it be found that he did lie about phone hacking, while Labour lead Ed Milliband once again called for the resignation of chief executive Rebekah Brooks.

Lord Justice Leveson will also be in charge of one of the investigations being lead into the practices at the News International title, while all political parties are expected to join together to call on Rupert Murdoch to drop his bid to acquire the remaining shares of BSkyB which will now go to the Competition Commission for a decision as to whether the takeover should proceed.

Cameron said that the new allegations about the phone hacking practices have raised ‘serious questions’ about the bid by News International.

Earlier today News International's legal manager Tom Crone had left the company.
