A campaign geared toward encouraging advertisers out of the News of the World is gaining momentum on Twitter after a page set up to part the NoW with its advertisers drew 41,000 visits.

‘Follow the Money’, designed by @thegreatgonzo, acts as a launch pad for users to send pre-scripted tweets to the papers major advertisers – all urging them to pull their ads, with a single click.

This spurred @eroticpuffin to weigh in with a comprehensive spreadsheet compiling each and every advertiser, together with names and email addresses, for people to pester.

Andy Dawson, editor of BitterWallet.com, one of the first to instigate the notion of a Twitter rebellion, said: “It would be great to hit the NoW where it hurts the most – in the pocket. If it goes any way towards bringing about a cultural shift in how the tabloids operate , that would be better still.

“Dawson added: “It is also a lesson that people aren’t prepared to be passive anymore in this age of social media – if companies wants to join in and engage with their customers , they’d better be prepared for us to scream at them if we think they’re doing it wrong.
