Competition is white hot in sunny California. With another Facebook coup imminent, you can have a sneak peak at the Google+ entry in the social media race,

So will it do that ?

Jessica Van Sack, in the Boston Herald, said Google had done an excellent job of drumming up the hype. Google+ is very like Facebook — but with a a few improvements.

Circles: Instead of friend lists;

Sparks: You tell this feature your interests, and it provides you with targeted titbits .

Hangouts: An easy way to let friends know you’re available to chat via your Web cam.

However,it would be easy for Facebook to tag on similar features, she says, adding "The great hope of many who begrudgingly use Facebook is that Google+ will have a better privacy policy.

"As I used Google+ over the last few days, I found myself thinking what a pain it was to import my contacts all over again. For Google+ to have a real chance to succeed there has to be a mechanism to import contacts directly from Facebook."

And her conclusion: "Facebook is still the centre of most people’s social networking orbit, and I’m not sure this or any new platform is going to change that for a while."

The Los Angeles Times provided an excellent video on what Google+ is all about, great if you were not one of the favoured few. Here it is:

The LA Times verdict: " Google+ hasn't even been out for a week yet and still has some maturing to do before it can compete with all that Facebook offers.

"The one thing that is for sure is that social networks are only worth as much as the people who use them."
