News International has enlisted a law firm to draw up a code of practice to ensure there is no repeat of the News of the World phone-hacking scandal.

The Guardian quotes an email to staff from News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks, in which she reveals that the publisher has asked Olswang to "examine in great detail what can be learnt from the past".

Brooks said Olswang's job would be to "recommend a series of policies, practices and systems to create a more robust governance, compliance and legal structure for our papers that we hope over time can become a standard for the industry".

The move will be seen as another step by News International to draw a line under the phone-hacking furore. It has already paid out to notable public figures including Andy Gray and Sienna Miller, who claim their messages were intercepted.
