Tinopolis, a Welsh TV production group, has purchased A Smith & Co - the LA based firm behind shows including Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, in a deal thought to be worth around £60m.

Chief executive Colin A Smith will remain in position following the acquisition and join the Tinopolis board.

Tinopolis chairman Ron Jones said: "Structural changes in the market mean that traditional broadcasting now has to share its access to viewers with on-demand and non-broadcaster funded services. Many of these trends are US-originated and this acquisition ensures that Tinopolis is well placed to commercialise them."

A Smith & Co currently produces 1,600 hours of drama, factual and sports shows each year for more than 200 broadcasters.

Tinopolis meanwhile already owns Question Time producer Mentorn and sports production company Sunset & Vine.
